We are beyond happy with the creativity and attention to detail developed on our Applecross Residence. A palette of beige sandy tones, natural textured stones and grey hues reflect the Australian Coast we are all drawn to and love. A fitting design for its foreshore and Swan River views. In our final week of planning approval, we will continue to co-develop this stunning home with our amazing clients and their exciting brief.

Designed for a couple with two children, who regularly have family and friends to stay, the brief given to Seamus Ryan Architects was to create a house that had a strong and natural coastal feel. Given the slope of the land and the potential for neighbours to overlook, the strategy was to create a courtyard house typology. From the outset, there was also a desire to create strong contemporary architecture with clearly delineated functional spaces. While there was a temptation to deliver orthogonal lines in the design, the site, being close to the river, suggested a softer more curvaceous approach. Hence, there are a series of curved walls, both inside and out, organic-shaped skylights coupled and a curved-edged pool and raised garden beds.

The selection of materials, such as micro cement used as a render over the in situ concrete walls, also adds a softness to the home, as does the brass expressed in screens to shade areas such as bedrooms. The kitchen, for example, which benefits from both city as well as river views, features timber veneer joinery, paler-toned marble for benches and splashbacks and polished plastered walls to add texture and depth.

While the basement level is given over to car parking, a cellar (including an area for wine tasting), a sauna space with ice bath, the ground level – accessed by both a lift or stairs – has an open plan kitchen, dining and living areas. And on the first floor, there are children’s and a guest bedroom, together with the generous main bedroom – which is like a lavish five-star hotel suite one would find in cities such as New York – complete with a separate living/sitting area that leads to a private terrace framed by tropical plants. Hence this is clearly Perth rather than New York. Given the Mediterranean climate Down Under, there is also a strong connection to the outdoors, be it the pool, the terraces or the pool house – creating outdoor living areas that can be fully enjoyed all year round. And although it’s tempting to gravitate to the outdoors, even some of the indoor nooks create a seamless visual connection to the immediate garden and impressive city and river views beyond.

We engaged Seamus Ryan Architects to bring to life our vision for our new custom dream home in Applecross. An integral part of our design brief was focused on the sustainability and liveability of our home, without sacrificing on the architectural elements of the project. Seamus’s credentials and experience designing cutting edge passively focused homes gave us the confidence he could deliver on our vision. Seamus has been diligent and dedicated throughout the process from initial meeting, design creation, design development and council approval.

Importantly, Seamus has always been open to our feedback during the design stage and incorporated changes as requested with thoughtfulness and technical knowhow. We would highly recommend Seamus to anyone seeking a Perth Architect, who is highly focused on sustainability, luxury homes and has a dedicated passion for Architectural design.
